Batik Creation - Pilangkenceng, Jawa Timur

Paige and I used our off day from school to finally celebrate our 3rd year wedding anniversary by creating a Batik Tulis (hand created Indonesian style fabric) with a local artisan who has been creating batik fabrics for many years. We left our home at 8am to ride our bike about 45 minutes to another village to visit our friends home where he creates Batik for local companies, schools, and sales individually. The total process of learning to creating our pattern was 6 hours. The owner told us that his workers can create two full size pieces of fabric per day (2m x 1m). The experience was really nice as we were working with the owner and only one worker was painting many pieces of fabric that she had drawn the day before. Randomly customers would enter to meet with the owner then joke about us creating Batik, of course followed by all the normal questions about food and where we stay. As we were finishing a local group of high school student came to practice what will be a weekly activity. After than we took our fabric still wet and soaked in a slippery substance, to hold the color in, and rode back home in the heat of the day. We are happy to say after nearly a year and a half Indonesia still has much to offer.
